Malheur County is the Second largest County in the State of Oregon and is the 12th largest County in the nation. Malheur County has 9926 square miles and is larger than 12 individual States. The population of Malheur County is approximately 35,000 people. The name Malheur was first given to the Malheur River by a party of French fur trappers who referred to the river riviere-au-malheur (unfortunate river) because of furs being stolen from a river camp.
Malheur County is 94% Rangeland of which 2/3 is managed by the BLM.
The elevation ranges from approximately 2000 feet at the Snake River to 5000 foot plateaus and even a few peaks to 6000 feet.
